When Do Warehouse Managers Upgrade to a High Speed Door?

3 Reasons Why a Rapid Door Could Suit your Facility

Have you ever explored the option of high speed doors, but wondered whether your facility really needed them? You might have liked the idea of a super fast roller door letting your forklifts operate in turbo mode, but didn’t know if you could justify the investment.

Not all operations are big enough, or have a critical need for a fast, flexible, rapid roller door that can accommodate large amounts of traffic while maintaining a constant barrier against temperature loss and dust transfer.

On the other hand, we firmly believe that if your business really needs a high speed roller door, the ROI will outweigh the initial investment costs in the long run. But how can you tell?

Here are three key scenarios where a high speed door will certainly justify your investment.

1. You struggle to maintain a consistent temperature in your facility

High speed door opening reduce air loss

If your business is a food-processing facility, fruit & vegetable grower, or a cold-storage facility, you most likely have temperature-controlled areas within your facility to keep the food products fresh, prevent bacteria growth, and meet food safe requirements.

Alternatively, perhaps your manufacturing operation also requires temperature consistency for areas of production, or even simply for ergonomics and employee comfort.

If you find that it's not possible to keep a roller shutter closed throughout the day, and your doorways are constantly losing temperature, it's definitely a sign that you need to look into installing a rapid roller door.

2. Your energy consumption costs are through the roof

Losing money through energy consumption

Leading on from point number one, trying to lower energy consumption when you’re losing air through your doorways is fighting an uphill battle. If you’re not only struggling to maintain a consistent temperature within areas of your facility, but your energy costs are compounding while doing so, high speed doors are the answer.

Particularly when they're fitted with remote activation devices, rapid roller doors will allow constant forklift traffic, whilst quickly closing upon egress, significantly minimising the amount of air loss through the doorway, and lowering the amount of energy required to maintain that consistent temperature.

In fact, we’ve developed an energy calculator reporting tool, that will actually tell you the annual cost of your current opening, and compare those costs to savings you’d receive if the opening had a Movidor high speed door. You decide if it's worth the investment!

3. Your warehouse is filling up with dust (and it bothers you)

“And it bothers you” being the operative phrase. Some companies can leave their doors open all day and their warehouse fills up with dust, (or it doesn’t!) but it doesn’t affect operations, or product quality.

However, if you live in a particularly dusty environment and your warehouse contents is hindered by dust build-up, you might want to investigate options to reduce dust in your factory. High speed doors offer a full seal against dust, and the specification can be altered to include full-surround brush seals to prevent those sneeze-inducing dust particles from entering.

3. You can't keep birds and pests out of the factory

Prevent birds from entering warehouse

If your doors are open all day, there’s a good chance some pigeons will take the opportunity to build a beautiful life together in your rafters. Not good for production, for hygiene, or for employee sanity. If you’re struggling against the birds, mice or elephants entering through your open doorways, it would make sense to invest in a door solution that will prevent pests from entering – high speed doors.

When do you not need a rapid door in your facility?

There are some situations when you probably don’t need a high speed door, such as:

  • You only have one access point to your factory and you don’t have a great lot of traffic through your doorways
  • Your roller doors can stay open all day without causing any problems,
  • Your facility and product/service isn’t affected by temperature variation or dust.

We’d hate to see you go, but our team would probably explain to you (tears in eyes) that it just isn’t worth investing in a high traffic, rapid roller door solution.

Mind you, we don't mind suggesting to you that your doors are more important than you think. How fast they open, or the time they stay closed, are measures of productivity and efficiency for almost any business. If you accidentally hit them during movements through the opening, the downtime and cost of repair can be significant. In openings where traffic enters or exits by the minute and by the hour, the open-close cycle can impact the operational costs of the building, the maintenance required for the doors and your carbon footprint.

It is precisely for these considerations that door selection is critical.
